- Mick BrasherFebruary 5, 2026So sorry Sue to hear that you had lost Peter. He was such a lovely bloke ..... "One of nature's gentlemen " You will know Sue how well regarded he was in Customs, but the extended family may not. As Anthony highlighted in his eulogy, Peter treated everyone with respect, which was a highlight of his working career. There he treated everyone , from the youngest to the most senior, the same way - with respect and easy friendliness. He was held in huge esteem throughout the organization. He wouldn't have had an enemy in the place In the early 90s, Peter was in charge of a branch handling revenue generated in Australia. The Opposition had our current Minister in their sights and and over a long period were constantly questioning and challenging him. This meant Peter was spending an enormous amount of time over in his office, helping him to respond, and preparing him for later questions. He was clearly the Customs manager being put under ceaseless pressure at that time. The Government that year rather tentatively introduced a system of performance pay for its senior managers. It wasn't going to be a huge amount , and after tax probably only amounted to a few hundred dollars each. A meeting of eligible managers in Canberra was held to explain how it was to be administered. Peter was unable to attend, as not surprisingly he was over at the Minister's office again. When the performance pay arrangements had been explained, a motion from the floor put that individuals attending were prepared to forfeit their payments, and for the total amount available to Customs be directed to Peter. I can't think of a better way to illustrate what his co-workers though of him He was much loved and will be sorely missed Condolences from Marie and Mick
